Vol. 49 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Area Under Barley, Wheat, Oats, and Potatoes.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the area under barley in each county in the year 1932 and in the year 1933; and the total area under barley in each of those years.

If he will state the area under wheat in each county in the year 1932 and in the year 1933; and the total area under wheat in each of these years.

If he will state the area under oats in each county in the year 1932 and in the year 1933; and the total area under oats in each of these years.

If he will state the area under potatoes in each county in the year 1932 and in the year 1933; and the total area under potatoes in each of these years.

Dr. Ryan

I propose to answer these questions together. A statement showing the areas under barley, wheat, oats and potatoes in each county in Saorstát Eireann in 1932 and preliminary estimates of the areas in Saorstát Eireann as a whole in 1933 is being circulated with the Official Report. The estimated areas for 1933 are based on returns from sample district electoral divisions in each county, and while experience has shown that such estimates for the country as a whole are approximately accurate, it will be appreciated that it would not be possible to arrive at equally close approximations to county figures by the same method.

Following is the statement:—

AREA under Barley, Wheat, Oats and Potatoes in each County and Province in Saorstát Eireann on 1st June, 1932, and estimated area in Saorstát Eireann on 1st June, 1933.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would the Minister say that he hopes to see increased tillage in all cases? Is there an increased acreage under all heads?

Dr. Ryan

There is an increased acreage under wheat, barley, oats and potatoes.
