Vol. 49 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wool Stocks in the Saorstát.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, owing to the large stocks of wool on the hands of farmers, of which they are unable to dispose, he will consider the imposition of a tariff on the importation of foreign wool; or alternatively giving a bounty on the exportation of native wool.

The question of a tariff on the importation of foreign wool is a matter coming within the purview of the Minister for Industry and Commerce, to whom any questions on the subject should be addressed. As regards the subject of a bounty, it is not considered that, having regard to all the circumstances, and more especially the fact that no tariff has been placed by the British authorities on the import of that article, such payment is at present called for. I understand, moreover, that the prices of wool have recently advanced.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary or the Minister for Industry and Commerce say if more Irish wool could be used in the manufacture of woollen goods, a larger percentage than is being used, without lowering the grade of the material?

That is quite a distinct question.
