Vol. 49 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Black Oats.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that there is a considerable "carry over" of black oats, and with the prospect of an increased yield this year there will be little prospect of absorbing the total available quantity in the home market; and further, seeing that black oats cannot be made available for mixing with maize meal, except by adopting a process too costly for such a purpose, he will grant a bounty on the export of black oats to enable the normal export trade in black oats to be resumed.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by me on 25th ult. to a question asked by Deputy The O'Mahony on the oats situation, in which I indicated the measures adopted to secure an outlet not only for the unexhausted balance of last year's crop, but for the whole of the estimated surplus from the forthcoming harvest.

While I am aware that millers prefer white to black oats for admixture with maize meal, it is not the case that black oats cannot be so used save at excessive cost. I do not, therefore, propose to adopt the procedure suggested in the concluding portion of the question.
