Vol. 50 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labourers' Cottages Commission Report.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if the report of the Commission on the Purchase of Labourers' Cottages has now been fully considered; and if in accordance with the almost unanimous recommendations of the Commission a scheme has been prepared on which proposals for legislation for the implementing of said recommendations will be based; and if he will state when it is proposed to introduce such proposals.

The report of the Commission of Inquiry mentioned is being examined. The basis of sale recommended by the Commission necessitates an investigation of the numbers of cottages provided under loans issued for varying periods since 1883. Owing to the destruction of records, the compilation of this information has proved difficult, but it is expected that with the co-operation of local authorities it will shortly be possible to complete the examination of the Commission's recommendations.

Will the Minister consider, when introducing the Bill, giving the cottiers the same concession as was given to the farmers, a reduction of 50 per cent. on their rents?

All these matters will be considered in due time.
