Vol. 50 No. 7

In Committee on Finance. - Vote No. 17—Rates on Government Property.

I move:

Go ndeontar suim Bhreise ná raghaidh thar £600 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1934, chun Rátaí agus Sítiúisí in ionad Rátaí etc., i dtaobh Maoine Rialtais.

That a Supplementary sum not exceeding £600 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1934, for Rates and Contributions in lieu of Rates, etc., in respect of Government Property.

Would the Minister say where the additional expenditure arises? Does it arise from additional buildings in respect of which rates are paid? Is this a charge that existed at the beginning of the financial year, or has it arisen out of additional commitments during the year?

In some cases it is due to additional buildings, but mainly it arises because at the time the Estimate was prepared it was not possible to calculate exactly what the rates would be.

Does this include the Viceregal Lodge? It was said a year ago that no provision was made for the rates on the Viceregal Lodge. I presume we are paying the rates upon that white elephant in Phoenix Park, and also on the dungeon in which the Governor-General is kept, so that we are paying double rates now, instead of single rates two years ago.

We are not paying rates on the Governor-General's establishment.

Vote put and agreed to.
