Vol. 50 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Fertilisers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of persons engaged in the manufacture of fertilisers in the Irish Free State on (a) 1st September, 1931, before the imposition of the tariff on imported fertilisers; (b) 1st March, 1933, and (c) 1st September, 1933, respectively.

Dr. Ryan

Owing to the seasonal nature of this industry figures of employment are not collected in respect of the dates mentioned. The following information has, however, been supplied to my Department:—

Date

Employment.

26th October, 1931.

695 (for six firms).

16th March, 1933.

825 (for six firms).

26th October, 1933.

533 (for four firms).

The two remaining firms did not reopen until after the 26th October, 1933.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, does he not consider that, in view of the tariff imposed on fertilisers, many more persons should be engaged on that particular industry this year than ever before?
