In consequence of the enormous amount of work and expense involved in preparing all the statistics required, it would not be possible to do so.

Surely you could give the amount without going to the trouble of making out all the statistics. In a very important matter of that kind I think the House ought to know what the figure is. I shall give the Parliamentary Secretary any reasonable period he may require and then put down the question again so as to give him an opportunity. of answering it.
