Vol. 53 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Threatened Evictions in Dublin.

asked the Minister for Justice whether his attention has been drawn to the demonstrations in Dublin protesting against threatened eviction of tenants where, it is stated, they are unable to pay their rents; whether he has received any letter from the Irish Tenants' Protection Society, or any other organisation, calling on him to inquire into the rents now charged for tenement rooms, and requesting that, pending this inquiry, evictions should not take place; and whether he can take any immediate steps to secure such postponement of all evictions now threatened.

Dr. Ryan

I have seen the Press reports of the demonstrations referred to in the question. The question of the rents paid by tenement dwellers in Dublin is at present the subject of discussion between my Department and the Department of Local Government and Public Health. I have no power to interfere with the civil processes of the courts, and there are, therefore, no steps which I could take to secure postponement of any evictions that may be threatened.
