Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Strike Statistics.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of strikes that have taken place in the Free State for the 12 months ended the 30th of June last (or the nearest date thereto for which returns are available); if he will state also the number of strikes which occurred in the corresponding period in the years 1932 and 1933; giving the number of working days which were lost in each period.

The number of industrial disputes in the Saorstát involving stoppage of work which began during the 12 months ended 30th June, 1934, was 98; in the corresponding period ended 30th June, 1933, the number was 89, and in the corresponding period ended 30th June, 1932, the number was 55.

The number of working days lost in the 12 months ended 30th June, 1934, was 106,864; in the corresponding period ended 30th June, 1933, the number was 172,132, and in the corresponding period ended 30th June, 1932, the number was 13,296. The figures relating to working days refer to all disputes in progress during each period, whether the disputes began in such period or at a date prior to such period. Disputes which lasted less than one day or which involved a loss of less than ten working days have been excluded. Disputes in connection with Relief Grant schemes are not included in the figures given.
