Vol. 55 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Nenagh River.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether, it is the intention of the Commissioners for Public Works to proceed with the drainage of the Nenagh River, and if so, when it is proposed to start work on the scheme.

A scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, was submitted to occupiers of affected land in the Nenagh River proposed drainage district during October-November, 1931, and was rejected by a majority of them. A request from the Tipperary N.R. Council for a modified scheme at a less cost was subsequently considered, but as it was not possible to design a satisfactory modified scheme the request was refused by the Commissioners of Public Works.

A new petition under the Act would be necessary before any scheme for the drainage of this river could be again considered and unless the occupiers of benefited lands are prepared to bear their due proportion of the cost, the submission of such a petition would serve no useful purpose.

It should be borne in mind that in any new scheme which may be prepared under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, the occupiers would be called upon to pay substantially the same amounts as in the scheme which they rejected.
