Vol. 56 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Border Customs Hours.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the importance of the tourist traffic to the Irish Free State, and in order to give a fillip to the efforts of the Irish Tourist Association, he will extend the hours of the free attendance of Customs Officers at the frontier posts on the Northern Ireland border from nine o'clock to, say, eleven o'clock each evening during the period of the operation of summer time.

The extension of the hours during which Customs attendance is given free of charge at the land frontier by two hours each evening would entail considerable extra expense to the State. The facilities which would thereby be afforded to the tourist traffic proper would not, it is considered, justify the extension.

Could not the two men at these posts at present do it all the time within the eight hour day?

It is necessary to have two of them on more or less.
