Vol. 56 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cutting Telegraph Wires in County Cork.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in how many centres in the County of Cork telegraph or telephone wires were recently cut following the arrest of certain leading members of the I.R.A.; how many persons were detained and/or interrogated in connection with these outrages; how many of the persons so detained and/or interrogated were known to be (1) members of the I.R.A.; (2) members of Fianna Fáil; (3) members of the new Volunteer Force; and (4) members of Fine Gael or the League of Youth; and if any prosecutions were made, or are pending as a result of the police activity on the occasion of these outrages.

Telegraph or telephone wires were cut in 37 centres in County Cork during the month of April. So far as my information goes, these offences were not connected with the arrests to which the Deputy refers: on the contrary, they appear to have been a recrudescence of the illegal activities of quite a different organisation. Prosecutions are pending. I do not think that the other information asked for in the question would be of such value as to justify me in putting the police to the trouble of compiling it.
