Vol. 56 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Transport in Dublin.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is prepared to introduce proposals for legislation for the purpose of acquiring the privately owned road transport monopoly in Dublin and bringing it under public ownership.

The policy embodied in recent road transport legislation has not been sufficiently long in operation to enable the reorganisation to be effected that is necessary for the most satisfactory development or to allow the results of it to be fairly estimated.

I am not prepared, therefore, at this stage to introduce proposals for legislation to bring under public ownership the passenger transport undertakings of the Dublin area.

Do I understand that the policy announced by the Minister in this House in December, 1931, has not yet been abandoned and that at an early date the Minister will frame proposals to bring privately-owned transport under public control as indicated by him three years ago on behalf of his Party?

I do not think that the Deputy can read that into my reply.

Does the Minister wish now to make an amended statement of policy?
