Vol. 56 No. 10

Road Transport Bill, 1935—Report Stage.

Five amendments to this Bill have been tabled by Deputy McGilligan. I have informed the Deputy that the amendments are out of order, but as regards No. 4, which might be taken apart from the series and which is purely textual, I promised the Deputy that I would allow the amendment to be moved.

I move the amendment:

In page 2, Section 2 (1), line 31, to delete the word "merchandise" and substitute therefor the word "use" and in line 32 to delete the word "carried" and substitute therefor the word "carriage".

It is really a drafting amendment.

The amendment effects no change in the purpose of the measure and I am quite satisfied that the existing draft is better. It expresses more clearly what it is intended to convey.

I do not at all agree with the Minister. He may have a different conception of draftsmanship and phraseology, but I have no desire to press phraseology on the Minister.

Amendment withdrawn.
Question:—"That the Bill be received for Final consideration"—put and agreed to.

If there is no objection, I should like to take the Final Stage now.

I would ask the Minister not to take it to-day. There are certain important matters arising on this Bill which ought to be adverted to on the Fifth Stage regarding the position of beet growers and the carriage of beet.

I am not pressing it.

Final Stage fixed for Tuesday, 21st May.
