Vol. 57 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grading of Pigs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will take steps to bring about an arrangement with the Saorstát bacon curing firms whereby pigs bought for them would be graded alive instead of, as at present, after slaughter, on account of the adverse effect the present system is having on the country pig markets; and if he is aware that pig buyers are faced with risks of drastic cuts in the prices returned them by the factories which their small margin of profit could not possibly allow for.

In view of the expected early passage of the Pigs and Bacon Bill into law, I do not consider it desirable to anticipate any action which the Pigs Marketing Board may take in the matter of regulating the classification and grading of pigs. The grading can, of course, take place only after the animals have been slaughtered.

Is the Minister not aware of how unsatisfactory it is for people to have their pigs graded dead; that once pigs are slaughtered they cannot be taken away; and that if they were graded alive, as formerly, a man could bring them home and feed them for another market?
