Vol. 57 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clare Cottage Application.

(Clare) asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state (1) if Michael Hickey, Clonmoney, Bunratty, County Clare, is included in one of the cottage schemes initiated by the Clare Board of Health and sanctioned by his Department; (2) whether three sites were selected in respect of the applicant, and whether one of these is sanctioned by the Department's inspector or whether the three have been rejected; and, if so, on what grounds, and if the applicant because of this will now be deprived of an opportunity of getting a labourer's cottage under either of the two schemes approved.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. As regards the second part of the question I would inform the Deputy that on two occasions a site was included in separate schemes, made by the Clare Board of Health and Public Assistance, for the erection of a cottage for Michael Hickey. On the first occasion the site was rejected from the compulsory purchase order made in connection with the scheme, as it was situated on demesne land. On the second occasion the site was rejected from the order, on the grounds that the erection of a cottage thereon would cause undue interference with an already small frontage. Accordingly the Deputy will understand that a cottage cannot be erected for Michael Hickey on either of these sites, but it is open to the Board to select a more suitable site for the applicant.

Mr. Hogan

Is the Minister aware that three sites—not two—were selected in respect of this applicant, one of which was selected by himself, and that the Board of Health changed him on to demesne land, and that he was later on changed to another site? Has the applicant any remedy?

I presume that he can apply again to the Board of Health.

Mr. Hogan

And, I suppose, get the cottage in ten years' time?
