Vol. 58 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Budget Duties and Cost of Living.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will furnish the figures which he stated in the Dáil on the 12th June, 1935, had been estimated of the full effect on the 13th May, 1935, of the Budget duties on the retail prices of sugar, tea, and tobacco, and what the actual estimated increase in the cost of living index number for mid-May was as a result of the calculations based on these figures.

If the Budget duties of 4d. per lb. on tea, ¼d. per lb. on sugar and ½d. per oz. on tobacco had had their full effect, it is estimated that the index number of 151 for mid-May would have been 152. As the number for mid-February was 153, the figure on which the bonus will be calculated in the current half year is 155 in either case.
