Written Answers. - Payments Withheld from Co. Councils.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the total amount withheld from each county council on the 1st April, 1935, in respect of deficiencies in the Land Purchase Fund and the Land Bond Fund arising out of the arrears in land annuity payments, and the gross total of the amount so withheld from county councils.

The following table shows the total amount of arrears of annuities at February, 1935, in respect of half-yearly gales subsequent to the period for which arrears of annuities were funded:—

SUPPLEMENTARY.

(1) Arrears of Annuities were funded for the three years ending with the May/June 1935, gale, inclusive. The above table relates to arrears for the November/December, 1933 gale and two half-yearly gales in 1934.

(2) Sums of £300,000 and £250,000 have been paid over to county councils in respect of grants that were absorbed in the Guarantee Fund during the funded period.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state for each county council area the total additional amount withheld from Local Taxation Grants in respect of deficiencies in the Land Purchase Fund and the Land Bond Fund, arising out of arrears in the payment of Land Annuities accruing during the year ended 31st March, 1935, and if he will state in respect of each county council area the extent to which the sum so withheld has been included to be collected as rates in the Rates Warrant for the year 1935-36.

As regards the first part of the Question the following table shows the amount of arrears of annuities upon the clearance of the Guarantee Fund in February, 1935, in respect of the period from February, 1934, to February, 1935.

As regards the latter part of the Question the information is being obtained and will be supplied to the Deputy.
