Vol. 59 No. 1

Written Answers. - Statistics of Imports.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantity and the value of thread and ply yarn to which the Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 76) Order, 1935, refers, imported into Saorstát Eireann during each of the six months immediately preceding the date of issue of the Order; and the quantity and value of such articles imported during each of the corresponding six months of the two preceding years.

Full information in the precise form required is not available. The imports, however, of the commodity described as "cotton thread" in the three periods of six months, March-August, 1933, 1934, and 1935, were valued at £34,702, £39,521 and £31,146 respectively. The imports of the commodity described as "linen thread" in the same periods amounted to £10,628, £8,412, and £11,908 respectively. Particulars of the quantities of cotton and linen thread imported are not available. The imports of articles described as "ply yarns" wholly of cotton, linen or hemp for the period mid-May—31st August, 1935, amounted to 179,965 lbs., valued at £9,924. Particulars of imports for previous periods are not available.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantity and value of leather to which the Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 80) Order, 1935, refers, imported into Saorstát Eireann during each of the six months immediately preceding the date of issue of the Order; and the quantity and value of such articles imported during each of the corresponding six months of the two preceding years.

It is not possible to furnish an exact answer to this question. The following statement shows the quantity and value of the total imports of each description of leather as specified in the Official Import List for the stated periods, excluding bridle leather but including the other descriptions of leather which are exempted by the terms of the Order. Any imports of these descriptions are included in the statement under the heading "Leather, undressed, tanned, other kinds,""Leather, dressed, other sorts," or in other descriptions according to their nature or the use for which they were intended.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantity and value of racquets and component parts, hockey sticks and parts, cricket bats and parts, and game posts, to which the Emergency Imposition of Duties. (No. 77) Order, 1935, refers, imported into Saorstát Eireann during each of the six months immediately preceding the date of issue of the order; and the quantity and value of such articles imported during each of the corresponding six months of the two preceding years.

The required information is not available. The following statement shows the imports of Sports Goods in which imports of the items covered by the terms of the Order would have been included but separate particulars of the various items comprising the total are not available in my Department or in that of the Revenue Commissioners.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantity and value of paper felt, floor coverings, cork carpets, to which the Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 74) Order, 1935, refers, imported into Saorstát Eireann during each of the six months immediately preceding the date of issue of the Order; and the quantity and value of such articles imported during each of the corresponding six months of the two preceding years.

The required information is not available. Prior to the introduction of the Order imports of Paper Felt were not segregated from a number of general headings in which they may have been included.

The following statement shows imports for the periods specified which were described as "cork floor coverings,""rubber floor coverings,""oilcloth,""linoleum" and "floor coverings, not elsewhere specified or included." It is possible that certain items which do not fall within the scope of the Order may be included in the figures shown in the statement.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantity and value of vitreous enamelled hollow ware or wrought iron or steel, to which the Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 73) Order, 1935, refers, imported into Saorstát Eireann during each of the six months immediately preceding the date of issue of the Order; and the quantity and value of such articles imported during each of the corresponding six months of the two preceding years.

The required information is not available. The following were the imports of iron and steel manufactures, described in the Official Import List as "Hollow-ware, not elsewhere specified or included, wrought, enamelled" in the periods specified:—

These figures are exclusive of the quantities and values of imports of articles exempted by the Order. No information is available to show the proportion of the imports which could be described as "vitreous-enamelled." Furthermore, items covered by the terms of the Order may have been included in various headings according to the nature and use of the articles and information is not available as to the quantity and value of the imports of such articles which now come within the scope of the Order.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantity and value of almonds and almond preparations to which the Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 72) Order, 1935, refers, imported into Saorstát Eireann during each of the six months immediately preceding the date of issue of the Order; and the quantity and value of such articles imported during each of the corresponding six months of the two preceding years.

The Official Import List did not, prior to the introduction of the Order, require almonds and almond preparations to be separately described as such and accordingly it is not possible to give the information required.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the quantity and value of articles made wholly or mainly of iron and steel or of a combination of iron and steel to which the Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 81) Order, 1935, refers, imported into Saorstát Eireann during each of the six months immediately preceding the date of issue of the Order; and the quantity and value of such articles imported during each of the corresponding six months of the two preceding years.

The information required is not available as no separate statistics have been kept in respect of the goods. These goods have hitherto been imported under several classifications, e.g., parts of motor-car chassis, parts of animal-drawn vehicles, etc.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total quantity and value of onions to which Control of Imports (Quota No. 23) Order, 1935, relates, imported during the period beginning 1st November, 1934, and ending on 31st July, 1935, and the total amount, if any, of Customs duties paid in respect of these imports.

Imports under the heading of Raw Onions (whether fresh or dried) — to which the Control of Imports (Quota No. 23) Order, 1935, relates — during the period from the 1st November, 1934, to the 31st July, 1935, consisted of 113,707 cwts. of dried onions, valued at £45,838. Dried onions are not liable to Customs duty and, as there were no imports of fresh onions, which are liable to Customs duty under the Finance (Customs Duties) (No. 4) Act, 1932, Section 2 and Second Schedule, Reference No. 9 (g), no Customs duty was received in respect of imports of onions to which the above-mentioned quota order relates during the period referred to in the question.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the quantity and value of perambulators, perambulator bodies, chassis and shells, affected by Control of Imports (Quota No. 24) Order, 1935, imported into Saorstát Eireann during the 12 months ended the 31st December, 1934, and the total amount of Customs duties paid thereon; and if he will state the amount of Customs duties which it is estimated will be collected on the import of these articles during the financial year ended the 31st March, 1936.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available as separate accounts have not been kept in respect of the goods affected by the Control of Imports (Quota No. 24) Order, 1935, viz., rigid and non-collapsible perambulators. The only information available is that contained in the following table, which covers the period of 12 months ended the 31st December, 1934, and includes folding perambulators, go-cars, etc. not included in the Control of Imports (Quota No. 24) Order, 1935:—

It is not possible to furnish a reliable estimate of the amount of Customs duty likely to be collected in the current financial year on the importation of the articles covered by the quota order referred to.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total quantity and value of woven tissues of wool and worsteds to which Control of Imports (Quota No. 13) Order, 1935, refers, imported into Saorstát Eireann during the period beginning on the 1st November, 1934, and ending on the 30th April, 1935, and the total amount of Customs duties paid in respect of these imports.

During the period beginning on the 1st November, 1934, and ending on the 30th April, 1935, the quantity and value of woven tissues to which Control of Imports (Quota No. 13) Order, 1935, refers, imported into Saorstát Eireann, and the total amount of Customs duties paid in respect thereof were:— weight, 1,000,707 lbs.; square yards, 1,474,064; value, £165,025; duty, £49,717.
