Vol. 59 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clare Cottage Schemes.

Mr. P. Hogan

(Clare) asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state how many cottages have been erected to date by the Clare County Board of Health in respect of (a) Scheme No. 1 confirmed by the Minister on the 18th October, 1933, and (b) Scheme No. 2 confirmed by the Minister on the 20th February, 1935.

At the end of September, 1935—the latest date for which figures are available in my Department—the number of cottages completed by the Clare Board of Health and Public Assistance under

(a) No. 1 Scheme was 22; and

(b) No. 2 Scheme was 1.

In addition there are 223 (144 under No. 1 scheme and 79 under No. 2 scheme) in course of construction.

Mr. Hogan

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the county board of health proposed under one scheme to build 217 cottages and under No. 2 scheme to build 296? Is he satisfied, when there were 933 applications for cottages at the outset three years ago, that 23 houses represent a fair advance on the number of houses required to be built by the board? Has he any comment to make on that?

According to the figures at my disposal, the number of houses of the No. 1 scheme is 188 and the number in the No. 2 scheme is 219, making a total of 407. Of these, 223 are in course of construction, and I think it is a very substantial instalment. If we had these 407 labourers' cottages built it would have made a considerable inroad on the problem.

Mr. Hogan

I am not disputing the figures given by the Department. Is the Parliamentary Secretary satisfied that 23 houses in three years is a substantial advance, considering that there are applications for 933 houses from people in need of houses in the county?

I quite admit that there has been considerable delay on the part of the local authority in proceeding with the provision of good housing accommodation, but I think—in fact I am quite satisfied—there has been a considerable improvement recently and I believe we are now well on the road.

Mr. Hogan

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the contracts for 34 houses were due to be completed in September and that not one of them has been completed?

I have informed the Deputy of the number that are in course of construction, and I think it is a very substantial instalment.

Mr. Hogan

Yes, in course of construction, but that is a different thing.
