Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slaughter of Cattle and Sheep Act Returns.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (a) what is the number of inspectors and supervisors appointed under the Slaughter of Cattle and Sheep Act; (b) the total amount of salaries and travelling expenses paid to them; and (c) the cost of clerical staff and stationery in connection with the killing returns supplied by victuallers and in dealing with levies.

(a) The number of inspectors, supervisors and assistant supervisors appointed is 130; (b) the total amount of salaries and travelling expenses paid to above staff during period from 5th January, 1935, to 7th November, 1935, is: salaries, £31,875 6s. 0d.; travelling expenses, £3,419 8s. 1d.; (c) cost, per annum, of clerical staff employed in dealing with the levies under the Slaughter of Cattle and Sheep Act, £4,290 18s. 8d.; cost, per annum, of stationery in connection with the killing returns supplied by victuallers and in dealing with levies, £82.

Will the Minister say what is the particular work performed by the inspectors since the suspension of the guaranteed prices in respect of the Act referred to?

What are they?

If the Deputy would read the Act he would see what they are.

I submit that their most important duty is the drawing of their salaries.
