Vol. 59 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Surplus Grain.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that a number of grain buyers in the midland and southern counties have refused to adopt his scheme for the purchase of surplus grain; whether he is aware that large numbers of tillage farmers in the areas concerned have no suitable storage accommodation for same and are compelled to hire sacks at an excessive rate; and whether he is prepared to revise his scheme and make such arrangements as will enable farmers to dispose of their grain at a profitable price.

Although a number of grain buyers have not adopted the scheme for the purchase of oats and barley, the principal buyers in the districts referred to have agreed to participate in it, and very considerable purchases have been made by them.

I have at present under consideration the question of the further steps that may be necessary to speed up the purchase of oats and barley still in the hands of the growers.
