Vol. 61 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Hackney Owners.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will give consideration to an application by licensed motor hackney owners, who have been disqualified under regulations made under the Road Traffic Act, 1933, for a qualifying period during which such owners can fulfil the conditions laid down.

As it is not clear to what disqualification the Deputy refers, I am unable to promise favourable consideration to the application referred to in the question. I can assure him, however, that I will give full consideration to any representations that may be made on behalf of motor hackney owners on matters within my control.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if, in view of the fact that a number of motor hackney owners will lose their means of livelihood as a result of the administration of the regulations made under Section 15 of the Road Traffic Act, 1933, he will make provision for a scheme of reasonable compensation for such men on an approved scale.

If the Deputy will indicate the portion of the regulations to which exception is taken, and give me particulars of the cases he has in mind, the matter can be looked into.

Would the Minister be prepared to listen to a deputation that will put their views before him on this matter? Is he aware that there is grave danger of companies putting a number of hackneys on the road and causing numbers of present owners to be thrown out of employment, and will he give consideration to the fact that these men have been earning their livelihood as motor hackney owners and supporting their wives and families from that occupation?

I certainly will give consideration to any representation the Deputy may make to me on the matter.
