Vol. 63 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Food Supplies for British Market.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is aware that the British Government is setting about the formulation of a new food policy in connection with the development of its defence programme, and if our representatives are keeping in touch with the British Government on this important matter of food supplies, and if he will take the opportunity thus afforded, of not only ending the present economic war, but of securing a permanent advantageous position in the British market for the agricultural products of this country.

I am aware that the British Government have recently set up a committee to examine the question of food supply in an emergency. It is, of course, not possible to foretell what the findings of that committee will be, or what policy will ultimately be formulated thereon, but in any event the Government of Saorstát Eireann will continue to use every opportunity of improving the position of Saorstát Eireann agricultural products in the British market. The Government keeps in touch with the British Government on this as on all matters affecting our trade interests.
