Vol. 63 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tipperary County Council Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that, contrary to the practice in other counties, the carters and gangers in constant employment under the Tipperary South Riding County Council are not allowed a weekly half-holiday, and if in the circumstances he will take steps to see that these workers receive the benefits conferred by the Conditions of Employment Act, 1936.

In the absence of new legislation, I am not in a position to take any legal action which would extend the benefits of the Conditions of Employment Act to workers other than those employed on industrial work as defined in the Act.

Is the Minister aware that as a result of the operation of the Act those men are compelled to take a half-holiday at their own expense?

I have nothing to add, Sir.
