Vol. 64 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Insurance.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the figures as to the value of unemployment insuran stamps sold in each of the years 1934 to 1935 inclusive given by him in the Dáil on 4th November, 1936, differ from those given on 6th December, 1934 11th April, 1935, and 23rd April, 1936 as being the income derived from the sale of unemployment insurance stamps, and if he will explain how the difference arises.

The difference in the figure eferred to arises from the fact that value of unemployment insurance mps sold includes the actual receipts by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs from such sales in the specified period, whereas the income derived from the sale of unemployment insurance stamps includes the amounts actually transferred by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs within the same period to the credit of the Unemployment Fund, on account of such sales. The interdepartmental accounting arrangements necessarily involve a certain time-lag.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state with respect to each of the years 1929 and 1930 the value of unemployment insurance stamps sold, and if for the years in which contributions to the Unemployment Insurance Fund were of a lesser rate he will adjust the figures as to the value of unemployment insurance stamps sold so as to compare with the years in which the contribution rate was at or about 1/7.

I am circulating with the Official Report a statement containing the desired information.

Following is the statement:—

The value of unemployment insurance stamps sold in each of the years 1929 and 1930 was:

1929

£694,794

1930

£701,017

and the figures for unemployment insurance stamps sold in the years in which contributions to the Unemployment Fund were at a lesser rate would be as follows, after adjustment in respect of the difference in the rate of contribution:

1931

£766,877

1932

£756,174

1933

£782,978

1934

£807,722
