Vol. 65 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Whitegate Estates (County Clare).

Mr. Hogan

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when it is proposed to acquire and divide the Blake and Sampson estates in the Whitegate district, and if, in view of the large number of landless men and uneconomic holders in the district, he will expedite the acquisition and distribution of these lands.

Mr. Boland

The Land Commission have had inspected some 200 acres of untenanted land on the Sampson estates, comprising lands of Whitegate, Gweeney, Deerpark North and South, and Pouleenacoona. The question of acquisition of these lands is under consideration, but it is not possible at present to state when they may be acquired and divided. Investigations are also being made regarding other lands comprised in the Sampson estates, and there will be no avoidable delay in the matter The Blake estate to which the Deputy refers would appear to be a tenanted holding comprising 116 acres in the townlands of Clonmohaun and Meelick on the Sampson estate, Record No. S. 6891, formerly in the possession of Mr. Henry St. John Blake. The question of instituting proceedings for the resumption of this holding has not yet been decided by the Land Commission.
