Vol. 67 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Gangers in Mayo.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of gangers and charge hands appointed by the Office of Public Works in the Dáil division of North Mayo in each of the past three years; the number employed in previous years who were not re-employed in the current year, and the reason for their non-appointment, and if he will state the number of gangers and charge hands now employed in that area who were appointed during the last three months of 1936 and the first three months of 1937 for the first time.

Appointments of gangers and charge hands on employment schemes in rural areas are made by the county surveyor at his discretion, subject to preference being given to the most necessitous applicants who are, in the opinion of the county surveyor, otherwise suitable and competent.

The statistics and detailed information as to the character and competence of some hundreds of men which would be required to enable an answer to be given to the Deputy's question are not available and could not be compiled without a loss of official time, which would not appear to be justified by the public value of the information.
