Vol. 67 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Communication with County Cork Islands.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that there are three important islands off south-west Cork containing hundreds of inhabitants, viz.:—Cape Clear, Sherkin and Dursey island, which have no telegraphic or telephonic communication with the mainland, and if he will consider the question of extending the communications mentioned to these places.

The question of providing communication by means of wireless telegraphy between the mainland and a number of islands on the West and South coasts, including the three islands named, is under consideration. It will probably be some time before a decision can be arrived at.

How long is it under consideration?

Mr. Boland

It has been under consideration for a considerable time, but the Department's engineers are very busy and have not been able to furnish a report yet. The matter will be expedited as much as possible.

A practical survey has been made of the possibilities of the scheme?

Mr. Boland

As the Deputy is aware, the engineers have been very busy and have not had time to carry out the survey yet, but they will do so with as much expedition as possible.
