Vol. 69 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dredging of Balbriggan Harbour.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that Balbriggan Harbour is presently in a dangerous condition for shipping; and further, that it is seriously affecting the fishing industry there; and if he will take steps to have a full inquiry into the condition of the harbour with a view to having the harbour dredged as heretofore.

It has been represented to me by local interests concerned that Balbriggan Harbour is at present in an unsatisfactory condition for shipping. I have no information as to how the fishing industry is affected, and this would appear to be a matter for the Minister for Agriculture. I understand that, in view of the fishery interests involved, a grant to enable certain necessary dredging work to be undertaken was recently sanctioned by the Minister for Finance; that dredging operations were actually begun during the week commencing the 2nd, and suspended on account of tidal conditions on the 9th instant; and that arrangements were made, weather permitting, for dredging to be resumed on Monday last, the 18th instant. The latter part of the question does not, therefore, arise.
