Vol. 69 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Butter.

asked the Minister for Agricultural whether, in view of the increased cost of production in the dairying industry, and the increased cost of feeding stuffs, he is prepared to fix the price of butter at a figure which will enable creameries to pay at least 7d. per gallon for milk during the forthcoming winter months, thereby enabling farmers to meet in some measure their liabilities and pay a reasonable wage to their workers.

I am not prepared to fix the price of butter at the figure suggested, which would entail an increase in the average return to creameries to 172/- per cwt., equivalent to a retail price of 1/9 per lb.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, in view of the current value of butter, does he consider that the payment of 5d. per gallon to farmers is a Utopian and dishonest undertaking to give to the public?

Utopian and dishonest?

Yes. Perhaps the Minister will reply to my supplementary question. The Minister stated in public not very long ago that it was a dishonest attempt to bribe the farming community. Does he still take that view?

I do not think the price is Utopian, but if the Deputy will take the context in which I made that speech I will stand by it.

Is it still possible to pay that 5d. a gallon, and is it a dishonest undertaking?

I say that it is a dishonest agitation.

Would the Minister undertake to consult the Advisory Council before taking a decision on that?

Yes, before taking a decision, certainly.
