Vol. 69 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion in County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists in the Ward estate, Kilscoghagh. Scardane, Claremorris, County Mayo, where there are ten tenants whose poor law valuations are under £3 each; and if he will now state the cause of delay by the Irish Land Commission in taking over the large grazing farm of Gortanieran held by Messrs. Mellett which was retained for the relief of congestion in that estate under the Land Act, 1923.

Mr. Boland

The position in this case has been already explained to the Deputy in reply to previous questions. I can now only repeat that, following the publication by the Land Commission of a notice of intention to resume portion of the holding of Mark Kellett for the purpose of relieving congestion, a petition against resumption was presented by the tenant, and the hearing of this petition has been held up owing to difficulties of procedure concerning the powers of the Land Commission in regard to resumption. The general question of procedure in such cases is under consideration and until this is settled no further steps can be taken for the resumption of the lands referred to.
