Vol. 69 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the estate of James Phelan, Lisfunction, Ballyporeen, Cahir, County Tipperary, has been inspected; also the lands of the O'Donnell estate, situated in the townland of Gortishall and Kilcoran, Ballyporeen, Cahir, County Tipperary; and, if so, what is the nature of the report; and, if not, when an inspection will take place, and if he is aware that repeated applications have been made by the uneconomic holders and landless men of the district for the division of these lands.

Mr. Boland

The Land Commission are having inquiries made regarding the lands of Canigavisteal and Lisfunshion, in the occupation of James Phelan, and the lands of Gorteeshal and Kilcarroon in the occupation of Patrick O'Donnell, with a view to ascertaining if they are suitable for purposes of acquisition and division. It is not possible at present to state when the inquiries will be completed.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when the Armitage estate, Noan, Ballinure, Thurles, County Tipperary; the Hanly estate, Ballynonty, Thurles, County Tipperary; the Holloran estate, Lurgoe, Ballinure, Thurles, County Tipperary; the residential holding of Mrs. Fitzgerald, Hemphill estate, at Kilboy, Springhill, Killenaule, Thurles, County Tipperary, will be taken over by the Land Commission for division amongst the uneconomic holders and landless men, a list of whom has been supplied to the Department.

Mr. Boland

It is not possible at the present state of the proceedings to state whether or when the lands to which the Deputy refers may be acquired by the Land Commission for division. The present position in regard to the respective estates is as follows:—

It is proposed to have an inspection made of the lands of Knockforlagh, Noan, Ballaghboy and Ballimure, on the Armitage estate.

It has been decided to institute proceedings for the acquisition of portion of the untenanted lands on the estate of W. P. Hanly, deceased, and also for the resumption of two holdings on the Cobden estate which appear to have been formerly in the occupation of the late Mr. Hanly, and are now in the occupation of W. F. Sankey.

It is proposed to have an inspection made of the lands of Lurgoe on the O'Halloran estate.

There are at present no proceedings for the resumption of the holding of Mrs. Susan Fitzgerald in the townland of Springhill on the Hemphill estate.

Could the Minister state who supplied the list to the Department of uneconomic holders and landless men who will be glad to get some of this land?

That is a separate question.

No, Sir, it is in the original question in which Deputy Fogarty refers to a list of uneconomic holders and landless men supplied to the Department. I want to know if such a list was supplied by the secretary of the local Fianna Fáil cumann, and, if so, would he mind informing the House on another occasion how many of this secretary's relatives are included in the list?

It is sometimes supplied by a local gombeen man like you.

That is another disorderly interruption.

The Minister will let us know how many relatives are on this secretary's list.

Mr. Boland

If the Deputy or any of his Party would be as frank in these matters as I have been, it would be much better for the country and the House.

I should like to say that in that area of Tipperary we have a committee which is non-political, and representative of the whole area.

Mr. Boland

Do not take any notice of it.
