Vol. 69 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Meals for School Children.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether it is proposed to provide free meals for children attending primary schools in Dublin or at least for children attending those schools which cater for the children of families resident in tenement dwellings.

For over 20 years urban authorities have had power to provide meals for children attending national schools. Free meals are being supplied to necessitous children attending schools in Dublin City, and a proportion of the cost is borne by a Government grant.

Is it true to say that free meals are being provided for children attending primary schools in all the urban areas and also in Dublin?

There is power to provide them in the urban area.

They are being provided in Dublin?

For necessitous children, yes.
