Vol. 69 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Assistance.

Mr. A. Byrne

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has any proposals for the unemployed, and if, in view of the increased cost of living since their unemployment assistance allowances were fixed, he will see that consideration is given to their demands for a 25 per cent. increase.

I hope to introduce legislation embodying the Government's proposals at an early date.

Mr. Byrne

Will these proposals mean an increase in the allowances of the men who are at present suffering very great hardship? Does the Minister intend to give them an increase?

Wait and see.

Mr. Byrne

I shall go and tell that to the deputation in the gallery. Wait and see!

Is that remark in order?

There should be no reference to occupants of the gallery in this House.

Mr. Byrne

Wait and see for the unemployed! That is a nice answer for men who have not enough bread.

The dignity of the Lord Mayor!
