Vol. 69 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Board of Works Wages.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the rate of wages paid by the Board of Works on the work of erecting a bridge at Annamakiff, near Clones, County Monaghan (in the Annalore drainage area), was 24/- per week and 1/- per quarter-day overtime.

The rate of pay of labourers employed was 24/- weekly. Overtime worked by labourers on this scheme was reckoned and paid at time and a quarter.

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's reply, does he think that in construction work of that kind it is right to pay a wage of 24/-, and is that the trades union rate for construction work in that area?

It is the rate which has always been paid for work of that kind on drainage.

Is that the position of the Monaghan County Council?

I cannot say. Perhaps the Deputy will put down a separate question.

Will you ask the Parliamentary Secretary beside you?

Does the Parliamentary Secretary differentiate between relief works of an agricultural character and relief works of a constructional character such as this one?
