Vol. 69 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inspection of Fat Cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the number of inspectors appointed for the purpose of inspecting fat cattle exported from Éire in connection with the fat cattle bounty scheme, the conditions and period of their employment, and the terms of their remuneration.

The number of inspectors at present employed at ports and Border stations in connection with the certification of fat cattle presented for inspection under the bounty scheme is 12. The employment of these officers is strictly temporary, and will terminate on the conclusion of the bounty scheme, i.e., in June next. The rate of remuneration approved in their cases is £5 10s. 0d. a week inclusive.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the names and addresses and the previous occupation of the persons who have been appointed as inspectors to inspect fat cattle in connection with the administration of the scheme of export bounties on fat cattle.

It is not the practice of the Department to publish the names and addresses of officials assigned to particular duties. Each of the temporary inspectors employed in connection with certification of fat cattle under the bounty scheme has been provided with an identity card which indicates that he has been authorised by the Department to carry out inspection duties under the scheme. All of these inspectors were previously employed by the Department as assistant supervisors under the Slaughter of Cattle and Sheep Acts, 1934 and 1936, and were appointed to that grade as a result of an open competition held by the Civil Service Commissioners.
