asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (1) the number and situation of the slate quarries in West Cork to which grants for development were made from 1st January, 1932, to present date; (2) the total amount of the grants made in each case; (3) how many of the slate quarries to which such grants were allocated are now engaged in the production of slate, and (4) how many hands (exclusive of managers or such like) are employed in each of the quarries now working.

I will circulate a statement showing the grants made for slate development in West Cork and the total amount granted in each case. The most recent information available with regard to the third and fourth parts of the Deputy's question relates to June, 1938, when the slate industry in the area was severely depressed. At that time only five of the 14 quarries for which grants were given were in operation, employing a total of 59 men exclusive of managerial and other supervisory staffs. I understand that the position has improved since June.
