Vol. 73 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bounty on Fat Cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, with a view to encouraging winter feeding and to put feeders in this country on a similar basis as English farmers who enjoy a subsidy on fat cattle and in competition against whom our feeders have to buy stores, he is prepared to have a bounty paid on fat cattle during the coming season.

Since questions on this subject were put to me by Deputies Keating and Fagan on the 26th ultimo and 9th instant, respectively, I have given the matter further consideration and I do not see my way to recommend the payment of a bounty on the export of fat cattle.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I would like to ask the Minister does he not realise that now is the time to announce his intentions, because now is the time the cattle are going into the stall, and it would be necessary for feeders to know whether they are going to get a subsidy on the export of cattle or not. Later on it may be too late. It will not have the same effect.

Perhaps the Deputy did not hear me. I said that I do not see my way to recommend the payment of a bounty on the export of fat cattle.

Oh, you are not going to grant it.
