Vol. 73 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Withdrawal of Appointment of last Governor-General.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state the date upon which His Majesty the King of Great Britain withdrew the charter or patent or token of appointment of the last Governor-General of the Irish Free State; also the exact wording of the message signifying the withdrawal.

The office of Governor-General of Saorstát Eireann was created under the former Constitution. The provisions of that Constitution relating to the office were repealed by the Constitution (Amendment No. 27) Act, 1936. The office of Governor-General and the Commission of Appointment of the last Governor-General of Saorstát Eireann lapsed, therefore, when that statute became law, and the question of the withdrawal of the commission did not arise.
