Vol. 73 No. 8

In Committee on Finance. - Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices Bill, 1938—Money Resolution.

I move:—

That it is expedient to authorise such charges on and payments out of the Central Fund or the growing produce thereof and such payments out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas as are required to give effect to any Act of the present session to make provision for regulating the salaries of members of the Government, Parliamentary Secretaries, the Attorney-General, the Chairman and the Deputy-Chairman of Dáil Eireann, and the Chairman and the Deputy-Chairman of Seanad Eireann, to provide for the payment of additional allowances to the leaders of certain Parties in Dáil Eireann, to provide for the payment of pensions, gratuities and allowances to and in respect of persons who have held certain ministerial and parliamentary offices, and to provide for certain other matters connected with the matters aforesaid.

Sir, I oppose No. 1 on the grounds that if the Pigs and Bacon Marketing Board could be blasted out of existence a better day's work this House could not do.

The House has proceeded to No. 2.

We could not hear the Minister and I ask indulgence.

I am confident that the Deputy heard the Chair.

I certainly did not know what the nature of the Bill was and we were forced to inquire, Sir, what the Minister was saying. The Minister on certain occasions is not very audible on this side of the House and I ask the indulgence of the Chair, Sir, now that I have got the hang of what this business is, to oppose any design to continue the existence of the existing Pigs and Bacon Board.

The Deputy may not make a speech on the matter now. The Second Reading will be taken to-morrow.

Am I not entitled to make a short statement explaining my position on the First Reading of the Bill?

Not after that stage has been passed.

I do not wish to trespass on your indulgence.

The House has proceeded to item No. 2 on the Order Paper. In fact, I had actually announced No. 5.

Well, we will divide against it to-morrow, with the help of God, Sir.

No. 2 is the Money Resolution for item 5.

Question put and agreed to.
Resolution reported and agreed to.
