Vol. 73 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Building Materials.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention was directed to the investigation conducted by the Prices Commission into the cost of building materials; whether the report of the commission on that investigation was brought to his notice; and whether, having regard to the findings of the commission, he proposes taking any steps to curtail profiteering in the handling of building materials.

Since I received the report of the investigation conducted by the previous Prices Commission into the costs of building materials, I have had all the facts then brought to my notice under examination. In view of the more extensive powers given to the new Prices Commission by the Control of Prices Act, 1937, I decided that it would be more effective to ask the new commission to maintain constant supervision over the prices of building materials and to take whatever steps were practicable in the direction of securing reasonable prices. This investigation of building material prices is at the present moment receiving the active consideration of the Prices Commission.
