Vol. 73 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Oats.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the current price for oats at the mill in Éire is 7/- to 8/- per cwt., while the current price for flake oats delivered at Ballaghaderreen ranges from 21/6 to 20/- per cwt. in bulk and up to 29/6 per cwt. in packets; and whether he will take steps to inquire into the reasons for this very wide margin.

I have no official information as to the price of flaked oats in Ballaghaderreen. I am satisfied, however, that the price charged generally for flaked oatmeal requires examination, and such examination is about to be undertaken.

Is the Minister aware that the Prices Commission, on being applied to by me to investigate the matter, returned a courteous reply, Reference No. E.C. 1141, setting out therein precisely the information that the miller who tried to overcharge me for flake meal gave? Does the Prices Commission intend to get any information except what the millers gave? If so, may I inquire what is the use of the Prices Commission?

I said that they were not satisfied.

Does the Minister give notice that he intends to insist on a reduction in the price of flake meal at an early date?

No, there will be an examination.

How long will it take?

They are very quick.

It took nine months to investigate regarding motor cars.
