Vol. 73 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Winter Relief Grants.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the amount of the winter grants which will be made available for special relief works to each local authority in the present financial year, and the date on which these moneys will be placed at the disposal of such local authorities.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave him on the 23rd ultimo to a previous question put down by him. There are no winter grants, as such, but as intimated in my previous reply, it is the policy of my Department to encourage an intensification during the winter season of the employment on schemes to which grants from the Employment Schemes Vote have been allocated. Grants towards employment schemes formulated by local authorities are available in the present year up to a maximum of £635,570 for road works; £123,000 for housing development works, and £180,000 for public health works and allocations therefrom up to the totals indicated are made throughout the year subject to the condition that a substantial amount of the employment is afforded before the 31st March next.

That means that if Cork looks for a grant it can get it?
