Vol. 74 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial School Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he is yet in a position to state when Industrial school teachers will be taken under the control of his Department and paid the appropriate salary, as recommended in the report of the commission which examined the matter.

Inquiries are proceeding on the general question of implementing the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into the Reformatory and Industrial Schools System, 1934-36. Some of these recommendations will involve the introduction of legislation. I am having matters expedited with a view to having the recommendations implemented at the earliest possible date. I am not, however, at present in a position to state the precise date on which such of the teachers at present serving in these schools, as are sufficiently qualified, will be recognised as national teachers and paid salary accordingly, but the requisite preliminary reports are being obtained from the inspectors.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, am I to take it that that is a definite statement by the Minister that this particular recommendation will be implemented?
