Vol. 74 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Bog Roads.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the amount expended by the Land Commission for the construction of the road from Moonard through Barneygreggaun to Mossbrook bog, Claremorris area.

It is estimated that the cost of construction of the road from Moonard in the direction of Mossbrook bog was about £900. This road was made some years ago as part of the general scheme for the improvement of the McEllin estate on division and the sanction for roadmaking for the accommodation of allottees embraced the entire estate, so it is not feasible now to ascertain the precise expenditure on the particular road in question.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I would like to know whether in the case of new roads that are being made by the Land Commission he instructs the officials in his Department to comply with the specification required by the local authorities.

Mr. Boland

With all respect to the Deputy I think that is a separate question.

Then I shall have to put one down for the Minister.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that over 30 tenants of the Land Commission, in the townlands of Ballintleva, Kilnagower, Moonard and Rathduff, Claremorris, are unable to remove their turf from Mossbrook bog owing to the failure of the Land Commission to complete repairs of about 600 yards of the road from Barneygreggaun through the Mossbrook bog; and if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken to have the necessary repairs carried out.

Mr. Boland

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to his previous question of 5th July, 1938, on this matter, to which I have nothing to add.

Is the Minister aware that the Land Commission spent about £1,400 on the construction of a road from Moonard to Mossbrook bog, and that the road is being left there uncompleted? Is he further aware that there are about 30 tenants there who, because of this, have to carry the turf on their backs out of the bog? I should like to point out to the Minister that only about 600 yards of the road require to be completed. Will the Minister take steps to see that the road is completed, especially in view of the fact that it is not possible to get a minor relief grant in the district?
