Vol. 74 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Annuity Arrears (South Kerry).

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the fact that in South Kerry the execution of Land Commission warrants in the matter of arrears of annuities has been pursued unceasingly since August, 1937, and that in the main annuitants have endeavoured to meet their commitments willingly and to the best of their ability, and have given the minimum of trouble to the officers of the Circuit Court Registrar, he is prepared by suspending temporarily the collection of arrears to give a respite to the hard-pressed annuitants of the area who are feeling the effects of the economic war and of the bad harvest of the past year, and also to withdraw the special Gárda unit in the area.

Mr. Boland

The Land Commission are under a statutory obligation to collect instalments of land purchase annuities falling due and they cannot make any exception for a particular district in the ordinary machinery for collecting arrears.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, may I inquire (1) whether he has sent John Brown to Kerry, and (2) ——

That is a separate question.

Mr. Boland

When did the Deputy become the official questioner?

—— may I ask whether he has any reason to believe that there is a conspiracy to withhold annuities in the County Kerry?

Mr. Boland

If the Deputy wants an answer to that, he should put down a Parliamentary question.
