Vol. 75 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty on Fittings for A.R.P. Shelters.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is prepared to exempt from duty galvanized, corrugated, curved, heavy gauge, sheet iron sheets and the appropriate fittings required for air raid protection shelters.

There is no licensing provision in the instrument imposing the duty on the iron sheets referred to by the Deputy and I have, therefore, no power to recommend that they should be allowed to be imported free of duty. In the absence of details of the nature of the fittings referred to, it cannot be said whether or not they would be chargeable with duty.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, does he intend that, on practically the only air raid shelters which are at present available on the market, duty should have to be paid coming into this country? Although the Minister says that he wants details of the fittings before he can say whether they are dutiable or not, I am sorry to say there is no doubt in my mind that there would be a duty.

As I explained to the Deputy, the duty is chargeable under the law, and unless the law is changed the duty must be paid.

Are you going to change the law?

That is a matter for the Dáil.
