Vol. 76 No. 3

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers in Industrial Schools.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is yet in a position to carry out the scheme referred to in his statement of the 13th March last to confer on teachers of primary subjects in industrial schools the status, emoluments and privileges of national teachers, and, if not, when he expects to be able to implement the promise made on that occasion.

As I indicated on the 23rd March last in my reply to a query by Deputy Hurley during the debate on the Vote for Reformatory and Industrial Schools, the inspectors have been instructed to furnish reports to the Department on the suitability of teachers in industrial schools to be recognised as national teachers. Reports have been received in the majority of cases and are being considered at present. Steps are being taken to have outstanding reports furnished as soon as possible. I am not yet in a position to state when such teachers as are sufficiently qualified will be recognised as national teachers and paid salary accordingly, but I assure the Deputy that everything possible is being done to expedite the matter.
