Vol. 76 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Military Laundry.

asked the Minister for Defence whether the laundry at Military Headquarters, Parkgate Street, was closed down some four months ago; whether the closing down of the laundry resulted in the dismissal of a number of workers who were employed there for a considerable time; whether any application was made by the workers concerned for a gratuity or other payment for loss of employment; and, if so, whether he will state the date on which the applications were received, and when a decision is likely to be reached in regard to them.

The Dublin District Laundry, Parkgate, Dublin, was closed down on the 31st December, 1938, and the services of the laundry staff were dispensed with on that date. Applications for the payment of gratuities were received from the members of the laundry staff during November, 1938. The question of the payment of gratuities is still under consideration and every effort is being made to expedite a decision in the matter.

Can the Minister say when it will be possible to arrive at a decision? A number of these people are still walking around.

We are doing all we can to get a decision as quickly as possible.
